ICSTI 2018 Conference

ICSTI’s 2018 Conference on 10–11 September at the British Library, London

We are very pleased to confirm the above dates and venue for our 2018 conference. As a founding member of the WorldWideScience Alliance (WWSA), the British Library is generously offering meeting rooms for two days for both the ICSTI and WWSA annual meetings and for the WWSA 10th Anniversary event. The British Library is an iconic building in the centre of London.

ABOUT ICSTI’s 2018 CONFERENCE

Starting in 2018, ICSTI’s Annual Conference will be a two-day event that enables us to expand the time given to our Member-to-Member presentations, to extended ITOC and TACC workshops with more speakers than ever before, for the introduction of a regular session on ‘innovations’, and even more networking time for delegates.

The September Conference will comprise the following sessions:
On Monday 10 September: the ICSTI Annual General Meeting devoted to ICSTI management affairs and including Member-to-Member presentations, a special session on ‘Innovations that Work’, and a celebration of 10 years of the WorldWideScience Alliance. Day 1 is reserved for ICSTI members or by invitation.
On Tuesday 11 September: the ITOC and TACC workshops titled respectively ‘The Scientific Library of the Future’, and ‘Discovering and Connecting Related Research Objects in the Modern Science Landscape’. Both workshops are open community sessions.

ICSTI and ALPSP

The ICSTI Conference is followed by the ALPSP Conference and Awards 2018 from 12 to 14 September, to be held in Old Windsor, Berkshire, which is a very short train journey from London. As a partnership advantage, both organisations are delighted to offer exclusive conference registration pricing to their respective members.

ALPSP delegates willing to attend the ICSTI ITOC and TACC workshops on 11 September 2018: please fill out the ICSTI registration form to enjoy the exclusive registration rate reserved for ALPSP members.

ICSTI delegates planning to participate in the ALPSP Conference: to book your tickets and enjoy the special rates for ICSTI members, please use this link.

Important notice: Registrations for both meetings are handled separately.

ITOC and TACC WORKSHOPS

As part of the Conference, two workshops that are open to non-ICSTI members, are currently being prepared by ICSTI’s Information Trends and Opportunities Committee (ITOC) and Technical Activities Coordinating Committee (TACC). Margret Plank (TIB) and Brian Hitson (DOE/OSTI), respective chairs of the committees, are developing programmes which will gather panelists from across the globe to share insights on the topics of the workshops. Additional panel details will regularly be made available as the two sessions take shape.

We welcome participation of any delegates in these ICSTI Workshops. Please make sure to register in time!

ITOC Workshop - Chair: Margret Plank (TIB)

The Scientific Library of the Future
What is on the horizon for scientific libraries? Which trends and technology developments will drive transformation? These questions regarding technology adoption and changing user demands in scientific libraries are the drivers for the ITOC Workshop. Key trends that will very likely have a significant impact on library strategies, operations, and services are the decentralization of the web, distributed computing and storage, data analytics, artificial intelligence and knowledge graph infrastructures. Additionally somewhat older trends like open access, open science and research data management reveal new challenges every year. In this Workshop major scientific libraries and institutions will address the critical challenges that confront them and outline the strategies that they propose in order to best serve users and communities.

We are delighted to confirm participation of the following expert speakers at the ITOC session:
Torsten Reimer, The British Library
Abigail Potter, National Digital Initiatives, Library of Congress
Jerry Sheehan, National Library of Medicine (NIH/NLM)
Konrad Förstner, Provision of Information Services, ZB Med
Wilma van Wezenbeek, VSNU (Association of Universities in the Netherlands)
Markus Stocker, German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB)

TACC Workshop - Chair: Brian Hitson (DOE/OSTI)

Discovering and Connecting Related Research Objects in the Modern Science Landscape
Modern scientific research is data-intensive and computer-driven. The data that result from computer-driven experiments, models, and simulations – and the software used to drive experiments and analyze results – are as essential to the fabric of research outcomes and reproducibility as publications. This workshop highlights the nature of modern research and the innovations being used to make diverse but related research objects more discoverable and accessible. It will also demonstrate the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning to power smarter search engines, including their ability to understand relationships across diverse research objects.

We are delighted to confirm participation of the following expert speakers at the TACC session:
Kevin Ashley, Digital Curation Centre
Rachael Kotarski, The British Library, Freya Project
Paolo Manghi, Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell’Informazione, CNR (OpenAIRE infrastructure technical director)
Douglas Raymond, Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence
Alex Wade, Chan Zuckerberg’s Meta project
